Ampholak 7TX : Emulsifier for slow setting and clay stabilised bitumen emulsions

Ampholak 7TX is produced by Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry is a liquid water-soluble emulsifier for slow-setting emulsions for use in a range of industrial applications including waterproofing and roofing.

Ampholak 7TX can be used alone or as a co-emulsifier in combination with certain clays such as bentonite.

Clay stabilised emulsions with Ampholak 7TX are extremely slow
setting and can be applied by brush, squy or spray. The addionvel of clay dictates the viscosity of thelsion and it is possible make highly viscous products with correct formulation

Typical Usage

Type of Emulsion                    % 7TX              % Clay          Water phase pH

Slow-setting                                 1 to 2                                            11 to 12

Clay stabilised                             1 to 2                0.5 to 2              11 to 12

When making clay stabilised emulsions, a 5 to 8 % clay slurry should be prepared in advance of emulsion manufacture and left to stand fo minimum of 12 hours to allow the clay to become fully saturated. Good quality clays with low silicate content should be utilised to adamage to the emulsion mill. The waterphase should be prepare first diluting the clay slurry with the required amount of water folly addition of Ampholak 7TX and finally the pH modifier. If high viscosity emulsions are required potassium hydroxide must be used as base to achieve optimum swelling of the clay.

Ampholak 7TX emulsions can be formulated to pass the ASTM cement mix test through the incorporation of 0.1 to 0.5 % penta-sodium tripolyphosphate in the emulsion formulation.

Package and Storage

Ampholak 7TX is delivered in 220 litre polyethylene  drums ( 220 kg net) or in bulk. The product is stable for a minimum of two years in its original container at room temperature.
